Selling or pawning a Rolex in Sydney: what you will actually get
A Rolex is one of the most liquid assets you can walk into a pawnbroker with. Unlike most jewellery, a Rolex holds its value in a recognised secondary market — which means a pawnbroker can offer you significantly more than scrap metal value. Here is how it works.
What we look at
When you bring in a Rolex or other luxury watch, we look at four things: model and reference number, condition, box and papers, and current secondary market pricing.
Model and reference number. The reference is stamped on the case between the lugs at the 12 o'clock position. For Rolex, it looks like 116610LN (Submariner), 126710BLRO (GMT-Master II Pepsi), or 126234 (Datejust). The reference tells us exactly what we are dealing with — production period, dial variants, movement generation. Models with high demand (Submariner, Daytona, GMT-Master, Datejust with popular dials) command the strongest prices.
Condition. Honest assessment matters here. We look at the case sharpness (polished edges reduce value on sports models), dial condition (no fading, no moisture, no replaced hands), bezel condition (scratches and chips on ceramic bezels are effectively irreversible), and bracelet stretch. A watch that has been regularly serviced and carefully worn is worth meaningfully more than the same reference worn hard.
Box and papers. Original box, warranty card, chronometer certificate, and any hang tags or service papers add 10-25% to the sale or loan value. A full set Submariner commands a real premium over the watch alone.
Secondary market pricing. Rolex secondary market prices are published daily on platforms like Chrono24, WatchCharts, and the Bob's Watches index. We check these before every offer. The secondary market is the benchmark, not what you paid or what a jeweller's sticker says.
What other brands we lend against
Beyond Rolex: Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, IWC, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Omega (Speedmaster and Seamaster Pro have strong secondary markets), Cartier (Tank, Santos, Panthere), Tudor (Black Bay series), and Grand Seiko. We also see Breitling, Panerai, and TAG Heuer.
We do not lend against fashion watches from brands without a genuine secondary market, battery-powered dress watches without brand recognition, or pre-owned watches without any authentication basis.
Sell outright vs pawn loan
If you need cash and you want to keep the watch, a pawn loan is the right product. We hold the watch securely, you get a cash advance, and when you repay the loan plus interest within the agreed term, you get the watch back. Terms are usually 3-6 months.
If you want to sell outright, we make a purchase offer. You walk out with cash the same day. No waiting, no online auction fees, no risk of the buyer falling through.
How to prepare
Find the reference number before you come in — between the lugs at 12 o'clock. Gather any paperwork you have. If you have the original box, bring it. Clean the bracelet gently with a soft cloth if it is dusty. Do not polish the case.
Call ahead if you have a significant collection or a high-value single piece: 02 9715 7200. We can set aside time and have a second opinion ready.
What to avoid
Getting a watch polished before selling it. On sports watches especially, polishing rounds the case edges and destroys a significant percentage of the value. A properly worn unpolished case is worth more than a mirror-polished one to a serious buyer.
Accepting an offer based on retail replacement value. Retail price and secondary market value are not the same thing. The reference for your offer is the secondary market, not what it would cost new today.
